Maybe a silly question, but where do I install this and/or where does the characters.txt need to be?

I've installed the game off Steam into a non-default path: D:\My Games\Steam Games\steamapps\common\jabia

When I run this file it seems to work and remember the reprofiling I do, but I can't find a characters.txt file and when I start the game my changes aren't there.

@LtChambers
Hi, I'm kind of new here.
I want to ask you where's the link to your latest version of IMP, cuz what I downloaded from the link on the very first post doesn't have any buttons "Next" or "Previous" as you described?

Does it remember the reprofiling between runs of the program? If so, it must be reading a characters.txt from somewhere, and it should be <where you told it>/bin_win32/configs/characters.txt

I changed from buttons to a slider because it's much easier to scroll through all the mercs, either with the mouse or the arrow keys.

@ LtChambers

Is it possible to change the starting stats and skills of the other playable characters that you meet later in the game? Iggy, for instance. If I could get him to 70-80 Explosives that would be really helpful.

Started up the program, and then I clicked away the window that asked me where to point it to. I shutdown the program. Started it up again but then it didn't ask me where to point it to. Now the program doesn't modify any files and there doesn't appear to be a way to point the program to the right directory.

Try a general search for the characters.txt file no your hard drive. When you find it, delete the containing Steam folder with all the other files in it. Then start the mod again and it should ask you to point the location of the bin32 folder of your JABiA.

I'm assuming it defaults to the C drive, else I have a problem as my other disks are quite big and full. Searching them would take days.

Seeing as how it doesn't appear to default to the same directory the exe is in, the default Steam folder, or the temp folder, I'm guessing there's no path set and hence there's no characters.txt created. But that's just a guess.

EDIT: And it's not on my C drive, so I'll wait for a fix.

I had the same problem. So that was what I did. I just clicked Cancel when I first started it and then later after searching I actually found that the IMP had created a separate Steam folder on my D drive.

Thanks! I looked around my D drive and found it in D:\games\steam\steamapps\etc, which is not where my real Steam folder is located, by the way. I guess it put it on the D drive because I ran the exe from that drive.

I know I repeat myself but can anybody tell if it's possible to change the starting stats and skills of Iggy. I really like him and I want to keep him in one of my main squads but I need to make him more useful, particularly I want to get his Explosives skill to 75-80. I tried opening the characters.txt and changing the value there manually. I gave him a team player trait that way and it worked (his morale went to very good in a squad of 6) but all his other stats and skills stayed the same even though I specifically made Explosives 80. I simply can't wrap my head around this. Please!!! I don't want to change anything or anybody else, just him.

Changes to characters.txt only kick in when a unit is spawned. So after altering characters.txt, either leave the sector, come back and then recruit him, or restart the game.

I'm not sure if leaving the sector will help because I'm not sure how the game handles out of sector NPCs, whether they are saved or simply respawn next time you enter. If they are saved, then their stats get saved as well, so you'll need to start a new game to apply the changes.

Traits are always read from characters.txt, but skills are saved in the save game. Like BlackAlpha I'm not sure when that happens, but it is definitely true after you've already hired him. You'll need to hex edit your save game.

Well since I'm new to all this could you please clarify "hex edit".

In that case, the answer is just no. :P You'll have to wait for a save game editor, if one ever comes out.

Am I missing something obvious, or does Vince seem to be missing from the list when I scroll through all the mercs in IMP?

Nevermind, I guess he's not a Merc, he's a hireling.

I have tried to modify a character, however starting a new game resulted in no appearant changes to the original. I checked a text file which contains character data (characters.txt) and it contains original character data. So game sees no changes, file contains no changes, however editor reports full changes. It would be nice to know where editor stores this data (temporary file somwhere?) so that at least I could manualy copy paste generated character data. And yes, I did use editor after other mods were installed which are Blue Dawn Mod 0.3 and Firearms Rebalanced Experiment. I think that editor either can't access characters.txt file for whatever reason, or can't find whatever it is that is supposed to be there :\

EDIT: After reading a post couple of pages back it appears that yes, the damn thing is in D:\games\steam\.. folder. Ooops. May be a warning on main page about this behaviour would be good for other people who might experience this in the future.

Hey LT!

Just started a new game and edited myself into the game with your mod, as usual, and suddenly Waldo at Drassen Airport only wants to sell me ONE energy bar and nothing else!

When I then change everything back to default and start another new game, he sells his usual big load of stuff...

I guess your mod isn't compatible with the patch yet?

*EDIT*

The second merchant only has a steel helmet :S

You need to spend all your skill points and select all possible traits.
